Massage Therapy can help fend off viruses?

We're right in the beginning of cold and flu season in Ontario. The kids are back to school, central ventilation and heating systems are turned back on and we begin to spend more time indoors whether at work or play. All of these changes bring us closer together and into smaller and more commonly used spaces. This means more direct contact with others and their germs.

There are several things we can all do to help prevent the spread of disease and illness, most of which are very simple and easy to follow:
  • Wash your hands often using soap and water or a water based sanitizer. Before and after eating or preparing food, after you cough or sneeze, after touching common public objects (grocery carts, public doorways/handrails, money etc) and after using the washroom are some examples.
  • Eat a healthy, well balanced diet rich in a variety of fruits and vegetables.
  • Get plenty of rest and drink plenty of water.

These simple methods can help to reduce your risk of contracting illness causing germs, but what else can you do to help fight them once you inevitability pick one up? Boosting and supporting a healthy immune system and immuno-response to invading viruses and bacteria will not only decrease your sick time, but will better prepare your body for whatever threatens it. There are many supplements on the market available to help increase your immune response, yet not all are clinically proven, and they still require you to take something to do so. Our body's ability to prepare itself is stronger then we give it credit for, we just have to know how.

By following the list above, as distributed by Health Canada, we help our body's remain strong. Exercise stimulates immune response, meditation and stress control do so as well. Massage Therapy has also been directly proven to stimulate your immune systems for long lasting results post treatment in clinical studies. Not only does it provide you with therapeutic musculo-skeletal support, increased release of brain supporting endorphins, help to balance metabolism and relieve pain, it directly stimulates the body's immune system to search and destroy any invading viruses, bacteria and fungi.

So as you plan for this years cold and flu season don't forget to add Massage Therapy to your list!!
